CONTACT US ABOUT BECOMING A READING COACH!

A Children's Literacy Program

for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders

Reading Seed's mission is to have all children in Pima County schools reading at or above grade level by the end of the third grade.

The 2007-2008 school year is Reading Seed's 13th year. We have trained over 900 “Reading Coaches" volunteer/mentors. The program is growing and we're hoping you'll want to be a part of it.

As a volunteer, you will be spending a minimum of one hour a week working with two students (1/2 hour each), in a school close to your home. The students will be 1st , 2nd, or 3rd graders and you will work with the same children every week.

To accomplish our mission:

  • Reading Coaches must attend a free 3 hour Reading Seed Training Workshop taught by Allan Tractenberg offered at Public Libraries throughout Pima County.

  • We try to make reading fun so the students will become independent readers. Research indicates that children who enjoy reading will be more successful in school and life.

  • We do not teach the children to read…the teachers do that. We try to build trusting volunteer-student relationships, while creating a supportive, risk-free, caring environment that will build the child's self-confidence.

  • Volunteers work with reading materials that the teachers request, the volunteer brings in, or the child selects. We encourage flexibility.

Please review our TRAINING WORKSHOP schedule and try to attend one workshop to see if the program will work for you. We encourage you to call us to discuss this meaningful opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the children in Pima County.

Reading Seed is a program of the Rotary Club of Tucson, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
