Do you have one spare hour each week during the school year? You can volunteer to be a Reading Coach!  The job of the coach is to make reading fun so students become independent readers who are excited about what they can learn.  To become a Reading Coach, attendance is required at one training workshop

At the workshop, you receive an exciting and empowering training provided by a skilled professional.  Most trainings are taught by the founder of Reading Seed, Allan Tractenberg, who has been a Reading Coach for more than 15 years.

You will receive lots of great ideas and tactics to keep students’ engaged and involved. Plus, Reading Seed provides games that you can play with your students to break up reading time into smaller intervals. Your Reading Coach kit includes a training manual, coaches’ bag and lanyard, plus your fingerprints will be taken on-site during the training. You will select a school or choice of schools where you would like to volunteer and the grade level of students (1st, 2nd or 3rd) you prefer to work with.  Following the clearance of your fingerprints, a coordinator at the elementary school will contact you to set up a regular time each week for you to coach.

Reading Seed stays in touch with coaches via email communications and newsletters.  A volunteer appreciate event is usually held in the Spring.  Coaches are encouraged to check out books from our 18,000-book Lending Library. Our library focuses on books that are “high interest, low level” so the books are leveled for content, style and interest as well as reading level, which is lower. An online database can be used to search for and check out books based on interest level, reading level and topic, and books will be delivered directly to your school. The Donation Library also provides a great selection of gently used books that coaches can give to their students. Coaches must come into the Reading Seed offices to choose books from the Donation Library.

Reservations are required for training workshops.  Register on-line or call 520-798-0700 for further information.

What a great organization you are working with and representing. I am a firm believer in teaching everyone, no matter how young or old, to read. I cannot imagine how it would feel not to be able to read, which is a skill most of us take for granted. — Corrine Carlson-Cox, Business Development Coordinator for
